Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Survival of the Fittest"

Fiction or prophecy?
This is only 8 years away!
Consider recent developments in Artificial Intelligence and prepare for the possible (if not probable) mechanical Armageddon!
The penciler of this never-reprinted story from Key's Weird Tales of the Future #1 (1952) was a young Ross Andru, but the mediocre inking is clearly not his soon-to-be-partner Mike Esposito!
The identity of the embellisher, as well as the scripter remain a mystery to this day...

Space...Hero? Saturdays WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Jumpin' Jupiter 'In Space No One Can Hear You Laugh' "

..his third appearance from Weird Tales of the Future #4 (1953) is gonna make you plotz!

Whether it's his ongoing SpaceHawk and Space Patrol strips or any of the numerous one-shot tales he did, Wolverton's Golden Age output was always instantly-recognizable!
The humor strip ran in #2 thru #5 of Key Publications' Weird Tales of the Future, along with several serious sci-fi/horror one-shot stories also written and illustrated by the amazing Basil!
And, yes, we'll get to the second tale, along with the fourth (and final) one...in the future! (Where else?)

Space...Hero? Saturdays WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Jumpin' Jupiter in 'No Soup' "

Mentioning writer/artist Basil Wolverton in last week's Space Force Saturdays post..
...compelled us to see if there was anything else space-oriented we could present here!
Behold...
Whether it's his ongoing SpaceHawk and Space Patrol strips or any of the numerous one-shot tales he did, Wolverton's Golden Age output was always instantly-recognizable!

Reading Room WEIRD MYSTERIES "Spirits from Outer Space!"

An astronaut returns from space and doesn't act like himself...
...yeah, it's a bit of a cliche, but this tale from Key's Weird Mysteries #1 (1952), has a surprise gimmick to defeat the baddies!

Illustrated by Walter Palais (brother of better-known Golden Age artist Rudy Palais) and Mike Esposito, this "possession by aliens" tale manages to present a variation of the old story with the fact that literally ANY pain causes the parasite to flee.

Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "The Time Has Come"

Here's a sci-fi comic story starring a guy named Alan Moore...
...and he's not that Alan Moore, since this story from Key's Weird Tales of the Future #1 (1952) predates the award-winning writer's birth by a year!

On a similar (if somewhat silly) note, you can see TV's Green Hornet battle Frank Miller (not the writer/artist) HERE!
Ironically, the writer of this story is unknown, but the artist is John Bulthuis, whose credited work appeared in MLJ/Archie and Key Comics titles, but his style looks similar to quite a number of unidentified stories I've seen.

Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Ten Thousand Years Old!"

Here's the "pilot episode" for an ongoing comic series that never came about...
...but did see publication in Key's Weird Tales of the Future #1 (1952)!
It's an interesting premise, and the publishers even gave the story the coveted cover slot...
Art by Ross Andru and ?
...yet next issue, Jerry and Jill were nowhere to be found!
So, what happened?
With a cool (if somewhat implausible) story by an uncredited scripter and pencils (and possible inks) by Ross Andru, it seemed like the sort of ongoing feature that could anchor a title.
Was a second story commissioned?
We'll never know...

Reading Room WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Speck of Stardust!"

A tale about the warmth of love in the coldness of space...
...with a twist ending worthy of The Twilight Zone!
Illustrated by Hy Fleishman, this never-reprinted tale from Key's Weird Tales of the Future #4 (1952) by an unknown author is rather melancholy, but haert-warming, showing the power of True Love under near-impossible conditions!

Tales Twice Told WEIRD TALES OF THE FUTURE "Jonah"

In 1950s science fiction, the technology available in the year 2000 was truly amazing...
...it's a pity we didn't really have this stuff when the Millennium came about!
When this story was published in Key's Weird Tales of the Future #6 (1953), we really thought we'd have moving sidewalks, flying cars, interplanetary travel, and shrinking rays by 2000!
The writer is unknown, but the artist is Tony Mortellaro.
Be here Thursday, when we show how this story was retold in 1971!
